Movement, Rhythm, and Sensory Disturbances Affect Perceptual Reality
Individuals with severe autism are often highly sensitive. Sights, sound, smells, tastes and textures may serve as sensory irritants. Eliminate aggravations when possible, as students may engage in self-stimulatory behavior to modulate unwanted stimuli. Repetitive behaviors might also help some establish a rhythm to organize their movements. I speculate, that some students may also be trying to block out interfering thoughts and emotions of others. Shutting down and returning to their own internal world may provide rest and relaxation from the onslaught of interfering stimuli; nonetheless, I encourage students to stop when I am in the process of direct instruction, since, self-stimulation, seems to enable them to block me out as well. When not involved in instruction, I let them re-engage in their preferred self-stimulatory activities. If they are dangerous or socially unacceptable, I attempt to replace rather than fade them. I have noticed that self-stimulation seems to decrease naturally as students become more comfortable in their bodies and their environs.
